About the role

We have a moral and legal responsibility to ensure the health and safety of our people, and to ensure our activities have the minimum impact to the environment we live in.

Our executives and managers have a responsibility to deliver BT’s duty of care and need access to the competent advice and guidance that the role holder provides to enable them to deliver that.

Being up to date with the external legislative and regulatory environment enables us to ensure legal compliance which will enhance BT’s performance.

You’ll have the following responsibilities.

  • The role holder leads on business activities that ensure BT, Business and 3rd party suppliers comply with all requirements to assure Business of its health, safety and environmental risk

  • You will drive improvements to safety & environmental standards within the contract organisations through benchmarking other industries, interpreting new legislation and seeking out new products on the market.

  • You may author, own and approve nominated mandatory BT or Business, Environmental, Health and Safety policies e.g. Clerk of Working, Construction Design Management 2015 , Contractor Rules -controlled in ISIS library . Interpreting external legal frameworks in their requirements.

  • You may author, own and approver pan BT, Business or CFU specific risk assessments in line with external legal standards.

  • You may author, own, commission & deliver specialist Safety training content in line with external legal frameworks and business requirements – e.g Work at Height, Flat Roof, Vertical Ladder, Managers H&S training, Spills. Safety check training for managers

  • You will carry out contractor Health, Safety & Environmental assessments during Invitation to Tender, with professional advice to client and procurements teams contributing to procurement decisions.

  • You will carry out regular review of Contractors Health, Safety and Environmental management systems to ensure standards are met.

  • You will induct contract organisations and people in line with BT H&S policy and contribute to procurement decisions.

  • You will contribute to contractor operational review meetings with regard to EHS items – service improvement.

  • You may represent BT as an H&S professional at magistrate or crown court.

You’ll have the following skills and experience

It is a must:

  • NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent)

  • NEBOSH International in Occupational Health & Safety

  • English and Spanish in an advanced level

  • 5 Year of experience in relevant field

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field is a must.

  • Practical experience of managing occupational health & safety

  • Proven record of managing contractors

Preferred:

  • NEBOSH Or equivalent international standard

  • NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent

  • NEBOSH Environmental or equivalent

  • NEBOSH Construction or equivalent

The Health, Safety & Environment Manager manages teams in technical, strategic, and administrative activities of the HSE function, ensuring regulatory HSE compliance, development of HSE systems, processes and programmes, enabling operational excellence and safeguarding employees and communities.

What you’ll be doing

  1. Manages teams in the implementation of the global HSE policies, its mission and vision set, aligning with the wider global strategy.

  2. Manages teams in maintaining and implementing local operating procedures that meet the requirements of both the Group's HSE Integrated Management System and local laws.

  3. Manages assigned initiatives contributing to the implementation a HSE continuous improvement plan and operational compliance programme.

  4. Manages teams in fulfilling the HSE function's reporting capabilities leading the development of management information reports for the global Risk, Business Assurance and Compliance management team expectations.

  5. Manages teams and activities that ensure Group stakeholders adhere to robust processes that exceed the minimum legal HSE compliance requirements within the operating countries it is present in and establishes and embeds a HSE assurance programme to monitor legal compliance.

  6. Facilitates working partnerships and peer to peer relationships both within the function and across operations and wider stakeholders, to facilitate the achievement of objectives whilst promoting the best working practice and consistently high standards of HSE.

  7. Coordinates the necessary relationships with third parties, including enforcement agencies and audit bodies, clients and customers to reduce risk and continually improve the Group's HSE reputation.

  8. Coordinates activities that ensure all Group and Group supplier locations are risk profiled and that the risk profiling drives the HSE compliance monitoring and assurance programme.

  9. Champions, continuously develops and shares with team knowledge on emerging trends and changes in HSE.

  10. Coaches talent, and manages others, to develop capabilities and ensure performance through upskilling, development and recruitment.

  11. Implements ways to improve working processes within HSE.
